Moving forward, looking back: highlights of the new campus development in 2024
Dec 10, 2024
As we approach the end of the year, we’d like to highlight some of the milestones achieved with our exciting new campus development project.
2024 was a year of great progress. Construction crews have been busy on the site that will become home to our new hospital campus and one of the most modern and accessible hospitals and research centres in the country.
The site, which spans about 50 acres, underwent some big changes, most notably the building of a parking garage that will support the new hospital. And there’s been significant work behind the scenes too. Here’s a recap of some of the highlights from this past year.
Planning
Last February, The Ottawa Hospital and Infrastructure Ontario signed a Development Phase Agreement with The Ottawa Hospital Build Partners to develop and build the new hospital. Since then, we’ve been working to finalize designs, costs and construction schedule. This phase of planning will continue through 2025.
A May funding announcement meant we could continue plans to expand our Biotherapeutics Manufacturing Centre to the new campus, boosting local and national capacity to develop and manufacture life-saving biotherapeutics, including vaccines, gene therapies and cell therapies.
Construction
In March, with the help of three new tower cranes onsite, the first above-ground portions of the parking garage began to take shape. The video below released in April shows the beginnings of stairwells and the entrance ramp into the structure.
Precast concrete elements built near Montreal started getting delivered to the site over the summer and continue to be installed as the parking garage takes shape. The video below shows workers receiving and installing some of the precast concrete elements.
An aerial video from July shows progress on the parking garage and the location of where the main hospital will be built.
Community and staff engagement
Community stakeholders and Indigenous partners met regularly throughout the year to provide feedback and help inform the design and development of the new campus.
As part of a robust internal engagement plan, more than 200 user group meetings took place this past year. These meetings connect staff and physicians from across TOH with the development company and the planning team to review plans and designs for the various departments at the new campus and to make sure the new hospital will be designed with the patient’s care in mind. These meetings will continue into 2025.
The campaign to create tomorrow
Through the incredible support of our community and region, The Ottawa Hospital Foundation’s Campaign to Create Tomorrow reached $341 million in 2024 – more than two-thirds of its $500 million goal.
Learn how this historic campaign will support the new campus in the video below, featuring Cameron Love, President and CEO of The Ottawa Hospital and Tim Kluke, President and CEO of The Ottawa Hospital Foundation.
